Product Safety Engineer

Boston Dynamics is seeking a Senior Engineer in the field of product safety, regulatory compliance, and certification testing, especially in industrial and commercial environments.

Summary:

Producing safe robotic systems is critical to bringing the advanced robotic capabilities Boston Dynamics produces to market. The Product Safety Engineer will serve a strategic role in guiding product and application design teams to produce systems which are safe, capable, and meet key certification needs in a variety of markets. They will be responsible for designing safety systems, producing hazard analysis and risk assessments (HARA), working with customers to understand their safety needs,  and representing Boston Dynamics to standards bodies as new standards are developed.

The ideal candidate will have experience designing safety systems for mobile robots, and in product safety and regulation in the US and world markets including industrial automation and functional safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in product design to build safe, certifiable systems, including systems which rely on functional safety
  • Work with regulatory bodies and test labs to determine what’s necessary for market access for advanced robotic systems
  • Participate in standards organizations to set the path for future robotics safety standards
  • Conduct Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments
  • Work with customers to
    • Forge customer acceptance of novel robots
    • Establish safety practices
    • Develop concepts-of-operations for safe robot installations
  • Contribute to user manuals and training programs

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent is required with 5+ years of experience working in product safety and compliance
  • Solid safety technical background and hands-on experience in safety certifications of complex products and executing hazard and risk analysis
  • Experience with product safety standards and regulations in the US and world markets
  • Experience fielding safe robotic or automation installations in industrial settings
  • Experience fielding a product which relies on functional safety and familiarity with functional safety standards
